I am a board certified internist with over 20 years of diverse experience. I have practiced in the hospital setting since 2007. I have close to 10 years of experience as a physician advisor for 2 AMITA hospitals where I have helped recapture over a million dollars lost payments from denials. I have extensive knowledge about clinical documentation and how it impact the DRG and case mix index for hospitals. I have extensive experience in utilization management as well as advising physicians and case managers about status accuracy for admission. Because I have extensive experience as a hospitalist the includes both routine patients and critically ill patients, I am very skilled at extracting information from the patient's record to accurately reflect the patient's acuity of illness which favorably impacts DRG choice, length of stay, and the case mix index. In my experience as a physician advisor, I also handled all of the private payor denials, and I effectively overturned cases which returned over a million dollars to m hospitals. I have experience communicating with busy physicians about the importance of accurate documentation, and I know how to communicate with them in a way the is not off putting. As a result, I have a track record that of successfully working with doctors to improve their documentation and their understanding obtaining admission status accuracy.
From March of 2013 to March of 2020, I was the only medical consultant for Timberline Knolls, a residential treatment facility for adolescent woman and girls with mood disorders, substance abuse disorders, and eating disorders. While there, I enjoyed great success treating an extremely medically and psychiatrically complex patient population. While there I developed detoxification protocols and refeeding protocols that allowed for these patients to be medically stabilized with very infrequent hospitalizations. My extensive experience with the medical management patients on multiple psychotropic medications is vast, and I am quite skilled in optimizing these complicated regimens so that patients have very few side effects from psychotropic medications.
I also have extensive clinical experience. Early in my career, I ran a diabetic center for over 750 diabetic patients at an underserved federally qualified health center. With our comprehensive team approach, we successfully brought facilities average hemoglobin A1c from over 9 to around 7. I then transitioned to hospitalist medicine, where I was a founding partner of Assoicates of Inpatient Medicine. The group grew from 5 doctors to 22 doctors and 3 nurse practitioners. I worked with my group from November of 2007 to September 27, 2020. With the changes in Covid, I decided to leave hospitalist medicine and my job as a physician advisor so I could spend more time with my children who need supervision with online learning.
